Reclassification
For those heading to the US for Prep School, this is something you may encounter and need to understand! In Canada, we technically do not reclassify our athletes. Remember these principles and you won’t jeopardize your eligibility for a scholarship:
- Reclassification – Repeating a grade mainly to compete against student-athletes in your age group and or for academic purpose because the school or institution requires it
- Individual student-athlete reclassifying is NOT a language used by the NCAA
- In Ontario, the clock to achieve your 16 core courses starts in grade 9 (this differ in some other Provinces)
- Repeating a grade the NCAA deals with this as if you did NOT & the year is counted towards your 4 years. Regardless of the year you were born the clock starts in grade 9
- An example to clearly explain #4 if grade 10 will be repeated starting September 2020, the NCAA treats it as your 3rd year in high school because technically you should be in grade 11
- You can complete high school in 5 years
- You must complete your 16 core courses in your first 4 years of high school – 2 exceptions; If you graduate in 4 yrs, 1 additional core course can count towards your GPA or you have an identified learning disability, this allows you to take 3 additional core courses in your 5th year for D1 & unlimited for D2
- If you retake a course only 1 course will be accepted by the NCAA. This could leave you short a course and jeopardize your eligibility for a scholarship.
Make sure your school of choice understands RECLASSIFICATION!
